You've Been Adapting for So Long That You've Forgotten to Check in with Yourself

Living abroad asks a lot of us.

It asks us to adapt to new places, different cultures, changing circumstances, and often the needs of the people around us.

At first, that adaptation can feel exciting. It's part of the adventure. Over time, however, it can become a way of life: you become the person who figures things out, the person who adjusts, the person who keeps everything moving forward.

And whilst those are valuable strengths, there can come a point where so much energy has gone into adapting that you've stopped checking in with yourself.

It’s not that you don't matter or have done anything wrong. It’s simply because life has been busy asking other things of you.

For example, you may find yourself prioritising everyone else's needs before your own, or you struggle to answer questions about what you want from the future, or you’ve become so focused on making life work that you've forgotten to ask yourself whether it's still working for you.

The good news is that this isn't something that happens overnight. Which means it doesn't need to be fixed overnight either. Often the first step is simply creating a little space to pause, to reflect, and to ask yourself questions you may not have asked in a while.

A Gentle Next Step

Over the coming week, try asking yourself one simple question each day:

What do I need right now?

You don't need to act on the answer immediately. Just notice what comes up.

Reconnecting with ourselves tends to begin with something as simple as paying attention. And that can be a powerful place to start.
