You're Living Between Different Versions of Home

Home can become a surprisingly complicated word when you've lived abroad for a long time.

There may be places that still feel familiar, even though life there has continued without you. There may also be places where you've built a life, yet part of you still feels like an outsider. And there may be moments when you find yourself wondering exactly where you belong.

Many women living abroad recognise this feeling: the feeling of being connected to more than one place whilst not feeling fully rooted in any of them.

The feeling of missing people, traditions, conversations or experiences that are difficult to explain to those around you. Or the feeling of returning somewhere that once felt like home, only to realise that both you and that place have changed.

This isn't a sign that something is wrong. It's simply one of the realities of building a life across countries, cultures and years.

The truth is that belonging isn't always about geography. Often it's about feeling connected to yourself, wherever you happen to be.

A Gentle Next Step

Take a sheet of paper and write the word "home" in the centre.

Around it, write down all the people, places, experiences and feelings that come to mind.

You may discover that home is bigger, richer and more personal than any one location.
